Concrete floor grinding FAQs

If you’re considering concrete floor grinding for your home or business, we’ve put together these FAQs to cover common questions about the process.

Polished concrete is a process where the surface of concrete is ground with machinery using progressively finer polishing tools. It produces a high-gloss finish and brings out the aesthetic quality of the stones and cement.

More people are choosing to grind and polish their concrete floors as it offers many benefits over a standard concrete floor. The grinding and polishing process makes the surface of the concrete more dense, creating a tough, durable surface that outperforms most other flooring materials, with less maintenance and a much longer lifespan.

You can polish new or old concrete floors. Generally, we allow a week minimum for new concrete floors to allow time for the concrete to cure and settle. Old floors can be polished immediately. Polishing is best for indoor, weathertight areas.

Costs vary according to the individual requirements of each job, but grinding and polishing is a cost-effective alternative to most other flooring materials. Over the long-term, grinding and polishing can also save you money, as it requires little maintenance and has a much longer lifespan.

Polished concrete is actually a safer, less slippery surface than ordinary concrete, and even when wet, has a significantly higher slip resistance than tiled or wooden floors. It’s a common misconception that any shiny surface is slippery. At a microscopic level, polished concrete has a very bumpy surface, which gives it a superior friction coefficient.

No. Our machines run off our three phase generators. We also have LPG powered machines which reduces the number of electrical cables on site.

We vacuum as we grind and polish concrete using specialised vacuum cleaners for concrete dust. This eliminates the majority of dust, but due to the nature of the work, there can still be small amounts of residual dust.

As long as the structure of the concrete slab is sound, almost any concrete floor is suitable for grinding or polishing. Old concrete usually needs surface preparation before grinding and some patching is generally fine.

Yes. Using the latest surfacing materials to apply decorative coatings, you can have a concrete floor in almost any colour you want. The decorative coatings we apply to the surface also make the concrete stronger and more durable than ordinary concrete.
